Atomic Liquors Reopens on East Fremont

June 21, 2013
Atomic Liquors

Atomic Liquors at night

Atomic Liquors re-opens after begin closed for over 3 years on June 20, 2013, continuing the renewal of Downtown Las Vegas.

Originally built in 1945 called as Virginia’s Cafe, it was later renamed Atomic Liquors due to the above ground nuclear bomb testing at the Nevada Test Site. The patrons use to gather on the roof top to witness the bomb explosion which could be viewed and felt from atomic explosions at the Test Site 50+ miles away to the northeast.

The bar at 971 E. Fremont Street, a couple of blocks east of the Blvd. Barbara Streisand shot pool there, the pools tables are still there, and it is rumored that everyone from Frank Sinatra to the Smothers Brothers stopped in for drinks over the years. You see it is far enough away from the Strip that even headliners could stop in a be a regular Joe, or Frank or Dean. Several movies, including some westerns and 1995′s “Casino,” used the bar as a backdrop. The distinct neon sign can be seen in the movie hit the “Hangover”.

Atomic Liquors is one of the oldest continually open bars in Las Vegas still kept by the original owners, and hold liquor license Number 00001. Stella Sobchick who ran the bar with her husband Joseph, passed away on Jan 15, 2011 at the age of 91. Joe passed away 3 months earlier also at 91 years. They had run the business for 55 years.

With the re revitalization of downtown Las Vegas, especially the East Fremont District, the Atomic will help now extend renewal efforts on the east of the El Cortez as downtown reinvents itself.

The bombs are now gone and Atomic Liquors is back. Good luck, see you soon and cheers!

Wet ‘n’ Wild Construction Photos: Will it Open On Time?

May 10, 2013
Wet 'n' Wild

Wet 'n' Wild, will it open by May 27th?

The heat is on, and it not the weather. The looming deadline of May 27 is approaching blazing fast. Can the Las Vegas’ brand new water park be ready in time? to help answer that question, here are the latest photos of Las Vegas’ upcoming water park Wet ‘n’ Wild.

With the new water park getting ready to open in about 10 days, there is a lot of thing that still have to happen. From the photos you can see that the major slides are set up and some of them are up and running. Still to be complete is the plastering on the lazy river or as they call it the Colorado Cooler and probably the Red Rock Bay. The cabanas have been set up. But most of the large construction pieces seem to be in place.  There is going to be a lot of little things that will need to be finish, internal fencing between attractions, gates, ropes, awnings, signage, shops, restaurants plus all the final landscaping has to be installed. The majority of the landscaping already completed and has a nice balance of desert friendly rocks and plants, but a loot needs to be added on the interior.

Wet 'n' Wild Water Park

Las Vegas' new water park, Wet 'n' Wild Water Park. (under construction)

The place is larger the the original Wet ‘n Wild (Las Vegas Strip 1990-2004 at 27 acres) compared to this one at 41 acres. The parking lot and the attraction area are both bigger.

The place is coming together very fast but, can it be done by this Memorial Day?  I believe it will miss its deadline of Memorial Day, but by probably open about 2 weeks later -say June 10th. Can’t wait for it to open.

Las Vegas Foodie Fest 2013 – Photos

April 29, 2013

Three days of food truck goodness at this years Las Vegas Foodie Fest ended this Sunday with tried staff and empty trucks. The busy weekend feature local and regional food trucks including the Great Food Truck Race’s Season 3 winner, Seoul Sausage Co.

Big long lines, lots of trucks and weather too hot for April as the crowds packed the festival. I could not believe that people where waiting for 3-5  hours to trying to get some a few White Castle burgers when there was other great options available.

Here are some photos of the trucks at the festival. Including the non invite Sin City Snoballs out front of Bass Pro Shops. Sorry about the poor photo quality (iPhone), the DSLR was out of juice. Enjoy anyway.

New Pedestrian Bridge Installed in Downtown Las Vegas

April 17, 2013
Pedestrian Bridge Smith Center

New pedestrian bridge Installed today, connecting City Hall and the Smith Center.

The last segment of the new pedestrian bridge between Las Vegas City Hall’s parking garage and the parking lot of the Smith Center for the Performing Art was set in place today. The new bridge crosses a triple set of railroad tracks providing a much needed link between the Symphony Park and the rest of downtown Las Vegas. The new bridge is for pedestrians only  and connects the 3rd floor of City Hall’s parking garage to the parking lot for the Smith Center.  Lifting and setting the last section of bridge hadto be timed carefully due to the every present train traffic on the Union Pacific Railroad.
