New Pedestrian Bridge Installed in Downtown Las Vegas

April 17, 2013
Pedestrian Bridge Smith Center

New pedestrian bridge Installed today, connecting City Hall and the Smith Center.

The last segment of the new pedestrian bridge between Las Vegas City Hall’s parking garage and the parking lot of the Smith Center for the Performing Art was set in place today. The new bridge crosses a triple set of railroad tracks providing a much needed link between the Symphony Park and the rest of downtown Las Vegas. The new bridge is for pedestrians only  and connects the 3rd floor of City Hall’s parking garage to the parking lot for the Smith Center.  Lifting and setting the last section of bridge hadto be timed carefully due to the every present train traffic on the Union Pacific Railroad.

On This Date April 14, 2013 Daily Neon: Gold Spike Closes it Doors

Gold Spike Casino

Gold Spike Closed its doors on April 14, 2013 in Downtown Las Vegas

Another one for the history books. The Gold Spike Hotel and Casino closed its doors this weekend. The hotel was orginally opened in 1976 as the “Rendezvous” and has been sold a few times over the years. Again it was sold in 2008 to the Siegal Group who renovated the hotel and converted the adjoining Travel Inn Motel to the “Oasis at the Gold Spike” as a 52 room boutique hotel next door. In April 2013, it was reported that the property’s debt had been acquired by Tony Hsieh’s Downtown Project. Siegel then announced that it had sold the Gold Spike to the Downtown Project, the casino was closed on April 14.

UPDATE: It now open as Tony Hsieh’s new fraternity  house.

Daily Neon: Atomic Liquor Neon

Atomic Liquors

Atomic Liquors on East Fremont

Joe and Stella Sobchik opened their Fremont Street bar some 50 years ago when the desert shook from atomic bomb detonations at the Nevada Test Site.

The bar at 971 E. Fremont Street, a couple of blocks east of the Blvd. Barbara Streisand shot pool there, the pools tables are still there, and it is rumored that everyone from Frank Sinatra to the Smothers Brothers stopped in for drinks over the years. You see it is far enough away from the Strip that even headliners could stop in a be a regular Joe, or Frank or Dean. Several movies, including some westerns and 1995′s “Casino,” used the bar as a backdrop. Atomic Liquors is one of the oldest continually open bars in Las Vegas still kept by the original owners, and hold liquor license Number 00001. Stella once told me that she used to sit facing the front door and watched the mushroom clouds rise in the distance, that view has since been blocked by buildings.

Stella Sobchick who ran the bar with her husband Joseph, passed away on Jan 15, 2011 at the age of 91. Joe passed away 3 months earlier also at 91 years. They had run the business for 55 years.

After being closed since 2010, Atomic Liquors will be reopening sometime during April 2013 visit http://atomiclasvegas.com/ for more information.
