On this date: June 8, 1956 the Silver Palace Casino opened in Downtown Las Vegas.
The casino and restaurant was a new concept in Las Vegas.

It was the first two level club in Las Vegas with an escalator connecting the casino with the lower level restaurant.

When it opened, it was one of the larger clubs in Las Vegas, with 16,700 square feet of floor space on the two levels, the casino was designed for 200 slot machines, three dice tables, five 21 tables, one roulette wheel and Keno. On the outside, over 1,000 feet of neon tubes lit the First Street side of the club and more than 3,000 light bulbs cast the Silver Palace sign in bright splendor along Fremont.

The Silver Palace was designed Lee Linton, in the style of French contemporary artist Henri Matisse, The Silver Palace closed in 1964. After the Silver Palace closed, a long chain of opening and closings, which include the following: Carousel, Gamblers Hall of Fame, Sundance West, Sassy Sally’s and now Mermaids.

On This Date: May 6, 1950 Benny Binion opened the Westerner Saloon in Downtown Las Vegas

Before the famous Horseshoe, Legendary Texas gambler Benny Binion opened the Westerner Saloon & Gambling House at the location of the former Las Vegas Club, on May 6, 1950. The Westerner Saloon was located next to the Pioneer Club where the famous Vegas Vic neon sign still stands. Minion, then sold the Westerner Saloon in less than a year to buy the Eldorado Club and Apache Hotel where he opened the Horseshoe Club.

The Westerner Saloon & Gambling House had other owners until 1960 when it became Club Bingo.

Honest John’s in Downtown Las Vegas

March 21, 1961 Honest John’s Casino opens at 304 Ogden Street in downtown Las Vegas. This was small place was a slots only casino.

This was the Honest John’s located downtown and not the other one located on Las Vegas Blvd. and Sahara Ave. But, in 1968 it was renamed Lady Luck. In 1972, it expanded from its small beginnings to engulf the whole block as a full-fledged casino with restaurants and shops.

Currently the Downtown Grand resides at this location.
