Daily Neon: Arby’s Neon sign on Decatur Blvd. now gone

July 20, 2015
Arby's Classic Neon Hat sign

Arby’s Classic Neon Hat sign was found on Decatur Blvd Near Meadows Lane

Another classic neon sign has been removed in Las Vegas and it’s not the flashy ones found on the Strip or on downtown. The old Arby’s location (store #592) on Decatur Blvd. near Meadows Lane has been shuttered and the classic ten-gallon neon hat sign now removed, but I caught a photo before it was removed.

Peter Pan Motel on East Fremont

Peter Pan Motel open in 1967 and was closed in 2006 but reopened in 2007 with a new repaired neon sign.

Tony Hsieh of Zappos and the Downtown Project has acquired another property in downtown Las Vegas. The property is the small “Peter Pan Motel”. The actual motel is located just off of Fremont Street at 110 North 13th Street. No plans have been made public for Tony’s new acquisition.

Update 7/20/2015: The property is closed and is fenced off – the sign still remains.

Daily Neon: Blue Angel Motel Sign

July 14, 2015

Blue Angel Motel Sign

The Blue Angel opened in 1956. The well known sign was designed by iconic Neon Designer Betty Willis. Betty who also designed the Fabulous Las Vegas sign. Willis was criticized for depicting the well endowed angel that now over looks the motel. At one time, the angel revolved and was surrounded by blue jays. The Blue Angel was inspired, fittingly enough, by the Blue Fairy in Walt Disney’s classic animated feature, “Pinocchio”. The Blue Angel closed in 2011.

Daily Neon: Red Barn

Red Barn neon sign

Red Barn Classic Neon Cocktail Glass

The Red Barn began its existence in the late 1950’s as an antique store at 1317 Tropicana Ave. In the early 1960’s new owners converted it into a bar that became popular due to its proximity to the new university on Maryland Parkway. By the end of the decade, the bar had become a favorite entertainment spot for Las Vegas’ emerging gay community. The Red Barn closed in 1988 and owner Claude Howard donated its classic cocktail glass sign to the Allied Arts Council.  Installed as part of the Neon museum on November 15, 2000.
