On this date, June 10, 1997, Sunset Station hotel and casino opened after a large firework show at 9:30 pm. The property is located in Henderson, Nevada. Sunset Station is an off-strip locals casino located on Sunset Road near Interstate 515, across from the Galleria at Sunset shopping center. The hotel & casino cost $198 million and is the forth Vegas property owned by Stations Casino Inc. The company also owns and operates Palace Station, Boulder Station and Texas Station hotel-casinos in Las Vegas, as well as hotel-casinos in Kansas City and St. Charles, Mo.

The resort includes a 21-story hotel tower with 448 rooms, 13,000 sq ft of meeting space, slot machines, table games, a 13-screen movie theater, a 542-seat bingo hall, a 72-lane bowling alley open 24 hours a day, a 5,000-seat outdoor amphitheater, and nine restaurants.

The High Roller Observation Wheel Largest in the World with a 520 Foot Diameter

High Roller is a 550-foot tall  520-foot  diameter giant Ferris wheel on the Las Vegas Strip. It is the world’s tallest observation wheel, 9 ft  taller than the 541-foot Singapore Flyer, which held the record for the world’s tallest observation wheel from 2008 until 2014. After nearly three years of planning and construction it opened to the public on March 31, 2014.

High Roller Facts:

  • The High Roller tops out at 550 feet making it the largest observation wheel in the world.
  • In addition to its great height, the High Roller offers an immersive pre-ride experience for its passengers on their journey from ticketing through the wheel house complete with a lounge, to the wheel ride which features unparalleled views of the Las Vegas Strip.
  • The wheel structure boasts 7.2 million pounds of steel and 112 cables. Each cable measures approximately 225 feet, for a combined total of 25,256 feet.
  • The High Roller features 28 spherical cabins that hold 40 guests.
  • Each cabin weighs approximately 44,000 pounds and includes 300 square feet of glass.
  • The cabin windows are doubly curved and fabricated from four sheets of laminated glass.
  • Fabrication of the wheel began in late 2011 and took place in several locations across the globe including China, Japan, France, Sweden, Italy, Netherlands, Germany, Colorado, California and Las Vegas.
  • The High Roller travels at one foot per second and take roughly 30 minutes to make one full revolution.
  • The wheel is lit with more than 2,000 LED lights.

The El Cortez, a hotel and casino in downtown Las Vegas at 600 East Fremont Street is one of the oldest casino-hotel properties in Las Vegas. The hotel has continuously operated at the same Fremont Street location since 1941. Primarily Spanish Colonial Revival in style, it reflects a 1952 remodel when the facade was modernized. On February 22, 2013, the structure was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Author, Hunter S. Thompson, Died on February 20, 2005

On February 20 2005, Hunter S. Thompson (b.1937), gonzo journalist, committed suicide in Aspen, Colo. Thompson inserted himself into his accounts of America’s underbelly and popularized a first-person form of journalism in books such as “The Rum Diary” (1998) and “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” (1972).

Considered the father and pioneer of Gonzo journalism, regard his novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas as the greatest work of the late follower. The book, which is about a wildly psychedelic and crazy adventure of a journalist and a lawyer in Las Vegas, cemented its place in American literature as a critical insight into the failed counter-cultural movement of the 1960’s. It was adapted into a movie in 1998 starring Johnny Depp, who is a close friend of Thompson, and Benicio del Toro. To many fans, revisiting the savage journey of the two characters is the ultimate immersion in the book.

Former hotels at this location include: Tally-Ho (1963), King’s Crown (1965), Aladdin (1966), New Aladdin (2000).
