SLS hotel and casino opens in Las Vegas

SLS Hotel and Casino Las Vegas opened on August 23, 2014

HOTEL
Midnight on August 23, 2014, the former Sahara Hotel, the SLS, re-opened after a $415 million renovation. The Sahara hotel closed on May 16, 2011.

SPORTS
The Mountain Ridge All Stars Little League team loses the championship game, (7-5) to Chicago during the Little League World Series. This was the first time ever that a team from Nevada had made it to the World Series.

GAMING
The 20 year old slot machine at the MGM Grand, called the “Lion’s Share”, finally hit its long awaited progressive jackpot of over 2.4 million. The jackpot was hit by Walter and Linda Misco from New Hampshire. The slot machine was install in the 1990’s and had a cult like following as players queued in long lines to play. Now that the machine has paid out its jackpot it will be retired. The MGM Grand is considering letting the Misco’s take the winning machine.

Club Bingo open as the forth casino on highway 91, which is now called the Las Vegas strip, on July 24, 1947. The Sahara Hotel would be built later on the same location in 1952.

The New Frontier Hotel and Casino Closed in July 16, 2007

The New Frontier Hotel & Casino was the second resort that opened on the Las Vegas Strip and operated continuously from October 30, 1942 until it closed its doors for good at 12:00 A.M. on July 16, 2007.

The resort had the distinction of hosting Elvis Presley’s first Vegas appearance in 1956, and the final performance of Diana Ross and The Supremes on January 14, 1970.

The building was demolished on November 13, 2007. In 2007, A new hotel casino, tentatively titled the Las Vegas Plaza, was proposed to be built in its place but those plan were scuttled in 2011.

On This Date: July 2, 1969 The International Hotel in Las Vegas Opened

Opened as the International, then renamed to the Las Vegas Hilton, LVH then Westgate

It opened in 1969 as the International Hotel, and was known for many years as the Las Vegas Hilton, then briefly as the LVH – Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. It was renamed the Westgate Las Vegas on July 1, 2014. Elvis Presley performed for 58 consecutive sold out shows, breaking all Vegas attendance records, with stellar reviews coming from both critics and the public.

On the night of February 10, 1981, just 90 days after the devastating MGM Grand fire, an arson set fire to the Las Vegas Hilton on the eighth floor. The fire burned through the east wing of the hotel and spread to higher floors. Eight people died in this fire. In 1982, Philip Cline was sentenced to eight life sentences for his role in starting the fire. The hotel is now known as the Las Vegas Hotel and Casino.

The Famous Stardust Hotel & Casino Sign

On this Date, July 2, 1958, The Stardust Resort and Casino opened along the famous Las Vegas Strip. When the hotel opened, it had the largest casino and swimming pool in Nevada and the it was the largest hotel in the Las Vegas area. Although most of the modern casino complex, including its main 32-story tower, was built in 1991. The Stardust was originally a outer space themed hotel with planets, stars and galaxies on its facade.

But most remember the 188 foot tall neon sign that represented a shower of stardust around the words STARDUST. In 1991, the Stardust sign’s spaced themed lettering was replaced with a subdued typeface.

The Stardust officially closed on November 1, 2006 after operating continuously for 48 years. It was imploded on March 13, 2006

The Landmark Hotel and Casino in 1969

On this date, the Landmark opened on July 1, 1969. It took more than 8 years to complete and was bought up by Howard Hugues 6 months before its completion.

The Landmark Tower was a 525 rooms hotel/casino located at 364 Convention Center Drive on the corner of Paradise Rd. and Convention Center Drive. The Landmark opened on July 1, 1969 and closed on August 8, 1990.

The Landmark played host to famous celebrities such as Danny Thomas, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Freddy Fender’s first appearance. The Landmark was one of the few hotel properties not located on the Strip or in downtown Las Vegas but across the street from the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The Landmark was closed on August 8, 1990. and on November 7, 1995, it was imploded. The demolition was filmed and used in the movie “Mars Attack”. The Landmark was also featured in such movies like Viva Las Vegas, Diamonds Are Forever, Casino, and The Cooler. Also seen in TV Shows like Vegas and Crime Story.
