Stratosphere Tower in Las Vegas

Stratosphere Tower in Las Vegas at 1,149 feet tall.

Stratosphere Las Vegas is a tower, hotel, and casino located on Las Vegas Boulevard just north of the Las Vegas Strip. Its tower is also the tallest observation tower, and the 9th-tallest freestanding structure in the United States, as well as being the tallest structure in Las Vegas.

The Stratosphere was conceived by Bob Stupak as an addition to his Vegas World casino. At the conception of the project, one of the planned rides was to be a giant ape that would carry riders up and down on one of the tower’s columns. The original plans envisioned the Stratosphere exceeding the height of the CNN Tower at 1,815 ft., making it the world’s tallest freestanding structure at that time. However, due to possible interference with nearby McCarran International Airport, and any possible flights that come through Las Vegas, the Tower’s proposed height shrank multiple times, bringing it to its current height of 1,149 ft. On August 29, 1993, the Tower caught fire while still under construction. No one was injured, but the fire forced repairs and rebuilding that led to numerous delays in the construction of the Tower.

On This Date: April 21, 1958, United Airlines Flight 736 Mid-Air Collision near Las Vegas

April 21, 2017
United Airlines Flight 736 DC-7

United Airlines Flight 736 DC-7Mid-Air Collision near Las Vegas,  49 Fatalities on April 21, 1958

United Airlines Flight 736 was a daily U.S. transcontinental passenger flight operated by United Airlines that crashed on April 21, 1958, following a mid-air collision. The aircraft assigned to Flight 736, a Douglas DC-7 airliner carrying 47 persons, was flying at cruise altitude above  9 miles south of Las Vegas to a stopover at Denver, Colorado, when it was struck by a United States Air Force fighter jet crewed by two pilots. The collision occurred at 8:30 a.m. in clear weather within a major commercial airway; both aircraft fell out of control from 21,000 feet and crashed into the desert southwest of Las Vegas, Nevada.

There were no survivors from either aircraft, and with 49 fatalities it remains the deadliest crash in the history of the Las Vegas Valley. Among the victims were a group of military personnel and civilian contractors involved with sensitive Department of Defense weapons systems. The loss of the group triggered new rules prohibiting similar groups engaged in critical projects from flying aboard the same aircraft.

The official investigation stated that cockpit visibility limitations played a role in the accident, but also faulted military and civilian aviation authorities for not taking measures to reduce well-known collision risks that had existed for over a year within the confines of airways, despite numerous complaints from airline crews. The loss of United Airlines Flight 736—part of a series of 1950s mid-air collisions in American skies, including the well-publicized 1956 Grand Canyon mid-air collision—helped usher in widespread improvements in air traffic control within the United States.

The Crash Site location is 35°59’59″N 115°12’20″W, near Southern Highlands Golf Club, near the corner of West Cactus Ave and South Decatur Blvd, currently there is a strip-mall and houses built on/near the impact site.

On This Date: April 16, 1953 Henderson, Nevada Became a City

On this date, April 16, 1953  Henderson, Nevada was officially incorporated on April 16, 1953 as the City of Henderson.  Henderson is the second largest city in Nevada, after Las Vegas, with a population of 257,729 in the 2010 census. The city is part of the Las Vegas metropolitan area, which spans the entire Las Vegas Valley. Henderson occupies the southeastern end of the valley.

The township of Henderson first emerged in the 1940s during World War II with the building of the Basic Magnesium Plant. Henderson quickly became a main supplier of magnesium in the United States, which was called the “miracle metal” of World War II. The plant supplied the US War Department with magnesium for incendiary munition casings and airplane engines, frames, and other parts. A quarter of all US wartime magnesium came from the Henderson Plant to strengthen aluminum, using 25% of Hoover Dam’s power to separate the metal from its ore by electrolysis.

In 1988, the PEPCON rocket fuel factory in the modern-day Gibson Springs neighborhood of Henderson caught on fire. The fire quickly spread and engulfed the factory, spewing rocket fuel, smoke, and toxic fumes from the building. The factory was subsequently obliterated by a massive explosion caused by the fire, followed by six smaller explosions. The explosions sent shockwaves through the Las Vegas Valley, shattering glass and damaging buildings miles away in nearby Las Vegas. The explosions also caused some earthquakes, some of which measured over 3.0 on the Richter magnitude scale. Two people were killed, and an additional 372 people were injured.

The events of the PEPCON factory disaster spurred development in Henderson from its historical industrial development to largely residential and commercial as it is today. There are no signs of the PEPCON explosion today, and the site now consists mostly of office buildings.
